The next October 22nd, the city of Rivas Vaciamadrid will be the host of the 4th Assembly of the State Network for Participatory Budgeting. The main objective is based on creating participatory budgeting initiatives which will permit the citizenship to recover the public space and to develop their own instruments and strategies in order to take part and act on its environment. The State Network for Participatory Budgeting gathers local authorities, social movements and other academic institutions, in favour of a more participatory democracy. After three assemblies, the Network has established the foundations of a structure that was created for coordinating state actors and that promotes participatory budgeting as an element of citizen’s empowerment in the construction of cities.
Local governments know the vital needs of the majority of the citizenship, mainly affected by the inequalities provoked by the Global Crisis and we must face them with funding cuts and a reduction of the action capacity of local administrations within the context of an inhuman and useless answer to the crisis.
Within the framework of this meeting, the City Council of Rivas Vaciamadrid, the FAL Network and the State Network for Participatory Budgeting announce the European Meeting on Local Experiences of Participatory Democracy and Local Planning, taking place on October 22nd and 23rd and aiming at exchanging local and network experiences in the field of participatory democracy and starting the debate on the need and the possibility of creating European and bilateral partnerships.
